Bumper covers — removal and installation

Warning: The models covered by this manual are equipped with Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disarm the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).

Front bumper

1. Pull back the front portion of the fender well liner (see Front fender — removal and installation). Apply the parking brake, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.

2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems). On models equipped with fog lights, disconnect the electrical connectors at the fog lights on the back of the bumper cover. On Avalon models, the grille may be removed separately by removing the grille retaining bolts and clip. Carefully pull the grille out and disengage the remaining mounting clips.

3. Remove the radiator support cover mounting clips and cover (see illustration).

Note: Use a small screwdriver to pop the center button up on the plastic fasteners, but do not try to remove the center buttons. They stay in the ferrules.

Note: The number and location of the cover screws varies among the different models. Don’t try to remove the cover until all fasteners have been located and removed.

5. There are two locking pins located at the front portion of the fender well liner where it meets the bumper. The pins must be rotated 90-degrees (see illustration), then removed.

11.5 To remove the front portion of the inner fender well liner, rotate the lock pin (A) 90-degrees and pull it out, and remove the mounting screw (B) — 2012 and later models have two lock pins on the outside edge

6. Pull the fender well liner back and remove the bumper cover-to-fender mounting bolt (see illustration).

11.6 With the inner fender well liner pulled back, remove the one fender -to-bumper cover bolt at each side

7. There are four clips where the cover meets the front of the fenders. Pull outward on the ends of the cover to release the clips.

8. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure the tabs on the back of the bumper cover fit into the corresponding clips on the body before attaching the bolts and screws. An assistant would be helpful at this point.

Rear bumper

9. Working under the vehicle, detach the plastic pins securing the lower edge of the bumper cover (see illustration).

Note: Some models use a combination of plastic pins and screws to retain the rear edge of the bumper.

10. In the rear fender wells, remove the screw (s) securing the front edge of the cover to the fender well. On some models, the plastic fender well liner must be released for access.

11. Open the trunk lid and remove the fasteners securing the bumper cover in each corner (see illustration).

11.11 Inside the trunk, remove the corner mounting fasteners

12. Disconnect the electrical connectors to the parking system and/or back up camera, if equipped.

13. From under the vehicle, remove the screws securing the lower edge of the bumper cover. Pull the bumper cover out and away from the vehicle.

Note: Use a small screwdriver to pop the center button up on the plastic fasteners, but do not try to remove the center buttons — they stay in the ferrules. Where studs/bolts stick through the body, use a plastic hammer to tap them out of the body.

14. Installation is the reverse of removal.
