Steering column covers — removal and installation
Warning: The models covered by this manual are equipped with Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disarm the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems). On tilt steering columns, move the column to the lowest position. Remove the steering wheel (see Suspension and steering systems).
2. Remove the lower steering cover screws at the ends of the column covers (see illustration).
24.2 Remove the screws, then remove the steering column covers

3. Release the two mounting clips for the lower cover, and remove the lower cover. Release the mounting clip in the center of the upper cover, and remove the cover.

5. The upper mounting clips of the lower steering cover sit just beneath the instrument stalk on each side of the cover. Release these two upper mounting clips by pressing each side of the cover inward.
6. Insert a finger into the column’s tilt lever opening, release the lower mounting clip, and
then remove the lower steering column cover.
7. Release the four mounting clips across the top of the upper steering column cover. Press the edges of the cover inward to release the clips, and remove the upper steering column cover.
8. Installation is the reverse of removal.
