Parking brake cables — replacement
Rear parking brake cables to equalizer
1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Block the front wheels. Remove the wheel.
2. Make sure the parking brake is completely released, then remove the brake disc.
3. Remove the parking brake shoes and dis- connect the parking brake lever (see Parking brake shoes — replacement).
4. Unbolt the cable housing from the backing plate (see illustration).
13.4 To detach either parking brake cable housing from the brake backing plate, remove these two bolts
5. Unbolt all cable brackets (see illustration).
13.5 This parking brake cable bracket is located near the forward end of the strut rod (but there may be others, depending on the year and model)
6. Disconnect the exhaust and lower the pipe. Remove the exhaust heat shield for access to the cable clamps (see illustration). Trace the cable forward and locate the cable clamp (see illustration). Loosen the clamp bolt and slide the cable housing out of the clamp.
13.6a Remove the bolts and the exhaust heat shield that protects the cables (you may have to drop the exhaust pipe)
13.6b To release either parking brake cable from its cable clamp, loosen the clamp bolts (A) and slide the cable housing out of the clamp — (B) indicates the equalizer
7. Using locking pliers, remove the clip securing the cable end to the bracket.
Note: Before removing, mark the mounting configurations for the cable end.
8. Disconnect the cable end from the equalizer by aligning the cable with the slot in the top of the equalizer. Slide the cable end out of the hole (see illustration 13.6b).
Note: On Lexus models, remove the floor crossmember mounting fasteners and lift the crossmember out to access the equalizer.
9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Adjust the parking brake (see Parking brake — adjustment).
Parking brake lever-to equalizer cable
10. Remove the center console (see Body).
11. With the parking brake cable released, remove the locknut and the adjusting nut (see Parking brake — adjustment), then detach the cable from the lever.
12. Inside the console area, remove the two bolts securing the cable flange to the floor (see illustration). Twist the flange 90-degrees and push it out through the hole in the floorplan.
13.12 The cable flange is secured to the floorplan by these two bolts
13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Apply a light coat of grease to the portion of the cable end that contacts the equalizer. Adjust the parking brake cable (see Parking brake — adjustment).
Parking brake pedal-to intermediate lever cable (pedal-type models)
14. Remove the front seats, console and shift lever assembly (see Body).
15. Remove the two nuts securing the cable to the rear of the turnbuckle (see Parking brake — adjustment). Twist the turnbuckle off the front cable end.
16. On Lexus models with VSC, you’ll have to remove the yaw rate sensor from the console for access to the cable. Disconnect the electrical connector at the sensor, remove the two-sensor bracket-to-floor bolts and remove the sensor.
Caution: Do not separate the sensor from its bracket; remove them as an assembly only.
17. Remove the driver’s kick panel, knee bolster and knee bolster reinforcement (see Body) to access the parking brake pedal bracket sub-assembly.
18. Loosen and remove the locknut and adjuster nut on the cable end at the pedal assembly. Using locking pliers, remove the clip securing the cable end to the front of the parking brake pedal assembly and pull the cable out of the assembly.
19. Pull back the carpeting between the pedal assembly and the console area to locate the clamps securing the cable to the floor. Remove the clamps and the cable.
20. Installation is the reverse of removal. Adjust the parking brake (see Parking brake — adjustment).
