Coolant temperature indicator system — check
Warning: Wait until the engine is completely cool before beginning this procedure.
1. The coolant temperature indicator system consists of a temperature gauge on the dash and a sensor mounted on the engine.
On all models, an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor (see Emissions and engine control systems), which is an information sensor for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), provides a signal to the PCM which controls and actuates the temperature gauge.
2. If an overheating indication has occurred, first check the coolant level and mixture in the system (see Tune-up and routine maintenance). Refer to Section Troubleshooting before assuming that the temperature indicator is faulty.
3. Start the engine and warm it up for 10 minutes. If the temperature gauge has not moved from the C position, check the wiring harness connections going to the instrument cluster.
4. If there is a problem with the ECT sensor, it is very likely that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp will be illuminated and the sensor or circuit will need repair (see Emissions and engine control systems).
