Heater and air conditioning control assembly — removal and installation
Warning: The models covered by this manual are equipped with Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disarm the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems).
2. Remove the center console (see Body).
3. On Camry and Lexus models, use a trim tool to carefully pry the center register out (see Illustration) from each side, disengaging the clips from each side of the instrument panel.

4. On Avalon models, the center register and control panel are one piece; remove the center instrument panel trim panels (see Body). Use a trim tool to carefully pry the control assembly out (see Illustration) from each side, disengaging the clips from each side of the instrument panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the assembly.

5. Remove the audio/navigation unit (see Chassis electrical system) if equipped.
6. Remove the mounting brackets from each side of the audio/navigation unit.
7. Hold the audio/navigation unit and slide the a/c control assembly from left to right, releasing the retaining clips and control assembly.
8. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
9. Run the engine and check for proper functioning of the heater and air conditioning.
