Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor — replacement
Warning: Wait until the engine has cooled completely before beginning this procedure.
1. Make sure the ignition key is in the OFF position.
2. Remove the engine covers and drain approximately one gallon from the cooling system.
3. Remove the air filter housing (see Fuel and exhaust systems).
4. Disconnect the electrical connector and unscrew the sensor (see illustrations).
8.4a on four-cylinder models, the ECT sensor is located on the left end of the cylinder head
8.4b On V6 models, the ECT sensor is located on the left end of the engine on the coolant crossover between the cylinder heads
5. Wrap the threads of the new sensor with Teflon sealing tape to prevent leakage and thread corrosion (see illustration).
8.5 Wrap the threads of the ECT sensor with Teflon tape to prevent coolant leakage
6. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Caution: Handle the coolant sensor with care. Damage to this sensor will affect the operation of the entire fuel injection system.
