Knock sensor — replacement
Warning: Wait for the engine to cool completely before performing this procedure.
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure (see Fuel and exhaust systems), then disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems).
2. Drain the cooling system (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
Four-cylinder models
Note: The knock sensor is located on the backside of the engine block, directly below the cylinder head (facing toward the rear of the engine compartment) under the intake manifold.
3. Remove the intake manifold (see Four-cylinder engines).
4. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting nut and slide the knock sensor off of the mounting stud.
5. Install the knock sensor onto the stud, then tighten the nut to 15 ft-lbs. Don’t over-tighten the sensor or the sensor won’t work properly. Overtightening can also damage the sensor.
Note: Install the sensor in a parallel line to the engine block (no more than a 10-degree angle to the block).
V6 models
Note: V6 models use two knock sensors; they are located on top of the engine block, under the lower intake manifold. Both sensors must be replaced at the same time.
6. Remove the lower intake manifold (see V6 engine).
7. Disconnect the knock sensor harness electrical connector.
8. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the sensors.
9. Clean the mounting surface and install the knock sensor (s).
10. Tighten the sensor (s) bolt securely (approximately 15 ft-Ibis). Don’t overtighten the sensor or damage may occur.
Note: Install the sensor (s) in a parallel line to the engine block (no more than a 10-degree angle to the block)
All models
11. Reverse the removal procedure to reinstall all parts removed for access to the sensor (s).
12. Refill the cooling system (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
