Battery — disconnection and reconnection

Caution: Always disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal FIRST and hook it up LAST or the battery may be shorted by the tool being used to loosen the cable clamps.

Caution: Once the ignition switch is turned Off, always wait at least 90 seconds before disconnecting the negative battery cable. Several systems (the radio, time display, navigation system, parking assist, etc.) need this time to record memory and various settings before the power is disconnected.

1. Some systems on the vehicle require battery power to be available at all times, either to maintain continuous operation (alarm system, power door locks, etc.), or to maintain control unit memory (radio station presets, Powertrain Control Module and other control units). When the battery is disconnected, the power that maintains these systems is cut. So, before you disconnect the battery, please note that on a vehicle with power door locks, it’s a wise precaution to remove the key from the ignition and to keep it with you, so that it does not get locked inside if the power door locks should engage accidentally when the battery is reconnected!

2. Devices known as «memory-savers» can be used to avoid some of these problems. Precise details vary according to the device used. The typical memory saver is plugged into the cigarette lighter and is connected to a spare battery. Then the vehicle battery can be disconnected from the electrical system. The memory saver will provide sufficient current to maintain audio unit security codes, PCM memory, etc. and will provide power to always hot circuits such as the clock and radio memory circuits.

Warning: Some memory savers deliver a considerable amount of current in order to keep vehicle systems operational after the main battery is disconnected. If you’re using a memory saver, make sure that the circuit concerned is actually open before servicing it.

Warning: If you’re going to work near any of the airbag system components, the battery MUST be disconnected and a memory saver must NOT be used. If a memory saver is used, power will be supplied to the airbag, which means that it could accidentally deploy and cause serious personal injury.

3. To disconnect the battery for service pro- cedars requiring power to be cut from the vehicle, loosen the cable end bolt and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Isolate the cable end to prevent it from coming into accidental contact with the battery terminal.

4. Several relearn procedures must be per- formed on certain models after the battery is reconnected. These include:

  • ) Correcting steering angle neutral point
  • ) Power window initialization
  • ) Sunroof initialization
  • ) Smart access
  • ) Power trunk lid operation

Correcting steering angle neutral point (2012 and later Camry models, and 2013 and later Avalon and ES350 models)

5. Start the car and park it on a level surface.

6. Set the parking brake and move the shift lever to the P position.

7. Turn the steering wheel to the fully right position and then to the fully left position.

Note: If the distance course fines are not displayed on the display screen when using the parking assist or backup camera, have the

system checked by a Toyota or Lexus dealer or other qualified repair shop.

Power window initialization (2012 Avalon models)

8. Turn the ignition switch to on position.

9. If the window is fully closed, open it.

10. Pull up and hold the Auto Up switch, and completely close the window. Continue to hold up the Auto Up switch for at least 1 second after the window completely closes and then release the Auto Up switch.

Sunroof initialization and check (2012 Avalon models)

11. Turn the ignition switch to the on position.
12. Operate the sunroof by holding the Tilt Up switch until the roof glass complete tilts upward.

Smart Access Learning (2012 and later ES350 models)

13. Activate the main body ECU by performing a wireless door unlocks or lock operation.

14. If the battery had been completely discharged, initialize the steering lock system by performing Steps 18 through 20.

15. Move the shift lever to the P position.

16. Turn the engine switch off, and open the driver’s side door.

17. Depress the brake pedal, and press the START STOP switch.

18. To start the engine after the battery is reconnected, open and closed the driver’s side door. Wait 10 seconds or more, and then try to start the engine.

Note: The first start attempt will fail. This is normal. The steering lock ECU must learn the steering lock position. The engine can be started upon the second or subsequent start attempt.

Power Lid Reset (2013 and later ES350 models)

Note: Initialization is not necessary if the luggage compartment door was closed when the negative battery terminal was disconnected.

19. Manually close the luggage compartment door once.

20. Press the luggage door open switch, and confirm that the door opens.

21. Insert a piece of wood or some other object into the trunk, and press the door control switch. Confirm that the luggage compartment door immediately reverses direction once it contacts the wood.
