Four-cylinder engines
This Chapter is devoted to repair procedures for the four-cylinder engine, with the exception of overhaul.
2009 and earlier four-cylinder engines are designated 2AZ-FE (2.4L);
2010 and later four-cylinder engines are designated 2AR-FE (2.5L). These engines incorporate an aluminum cylinder block with a lower crankcase to strengthen the lower half of the block. Although the cylinder head utilizes the usual dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder as in previous model years, it is of new design also. The camshafts are driven from a single timing chain off the crankshaft, and a Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i) system is incorporated on the intake camshaft on 2AZ-FE engines and intake and exhaust camshafts on the 2AR-FE engines to increase horsepower and decrease emissions.
