Fuel rail and injectors — removal and installation

Warning: Gasoline is extremely flammable, so take extra precautions when you work on any part of the fuel system.

Removal

1. Relieve the fuel pressure (see Fuel pressure relief procedure).

2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems).

3. Remove the engine covers.

4. Remove the cowl assembly (see Body).

Four -cylinder models

5. Remove the air filter housing (see Air filter housing — removal and installation).

6. Remove the wiring harness mounting clips.

7. Disconnect the injector electrical connectors and remove the fuel rail mounting bolts (see illustration).

13.7 Remove the fuel rail mounting bolts — four-cylinder models

8. Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail (see Fuel lines and fittings — general information).

9. Remove the fuel rail with the fuel injectors attached.

10. Remove the fuel injector (s) from the fuel rail and set them aside in a clearly labeled storage container. Note: Remove the spacers and injector grommets from the cylinder head if they didn’t come off when the fuel rail was removed.

11. If you intend to re-use the same injectors, replace the grommets and 0-rings (see illustration).

13.11 Be sure to install new 0-rings on the injectors and the fuel pulsation damper

V6 models

12. Remove the air filter housing (see Air filter housing — removal and installation).

13. Remove the upper intake manifold (see V6 engine).

14. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel rail (see Fuel lines and fittings — general information).

15. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors (see illustration) and remove the fuel rail mounting fasteners (see illustration).

13.15a Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors (V6 models)

18. If you intend to re-use the same injectors, replace the grommets and 0-rings (see illustration).

13.18 Remove the 0-ring (A) and insulator (B) from each injector and discard them (always use a new one when installing an injector) (V6 models)
