Fuel tank — removal and installation

Warning: Gasoline is extremely flammable, so take extra precautions when you work on any part of the fuel system.

1. Relieve the fuel system pressure (see Fuel pressure relief procedure).

2. Remove the fuel filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure.

3. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems).

4. If the tank is full or nearly full, siphon the fuel into an approved container using a siphoning kit (available at most auto parts stores).

Warning: Do not start the siphoning action by mouth!

5. Remove the rear seat cushion (see Body).

6. Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands. Disconnect the parking brake cable mounting fasteners (see Brakes).

7. If necessary, on 2012 and later V6 models, remove the No. 1 air inlet and then remove the air resonator. Release the resonator clamp, turn out the mounting bolts, and remove the resonator. Note the location of any vacuum line or electrical connectors.

8. Remove the lower floor pan cover mounting fasteners and covers, if equipped.

9. Remove the exhaust system from the center exhaust pipe completely to the rear of the vehicle.

10. Refer to Section Fuel pump module/fuel level sending unit — removal, component replacement and installation and disconnect the electrical connector and fuel line from the fuel pump module, then disconnect the fuel filler hose from the fuel tank fittings (see illustration).

Note: Be sure to plug the hoses to prevent leakage and contamination of the fuel system.

11. Remove the rear stabilizer bar mounting brackets and move the bar away from the tank.

12. Remove the four fasteners securing the exhaust heat shield below the fuel tank (see illustration).

13. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack. Place a sturdy plank between the jack head and the fuel tank to protect the tank.

14. Remove the bolts from the fuel tank retaining straps.

15. Disconnect the vent hose at the rear of the tank and any other hoses or wiring harnesses that are attached to the tank.

16. Remove the tank from the vehicle.

17. Installation is the reverse of removal.
