Stabilizer bar and bushings (rear) — removal and installation
1. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts. Raise the rear of the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands. Remove the rear wheels.
2. Remove the heat insulator from the exhaust system.
3. Disconnect the stabilizer bar links from the bar (see illustration). If the ball stud turns with the nut, use an Allen wrench to hold the stud.
9.3 To detach the stabilizer bar link from the bar, remove the lower nut; if you’re removing the strut, remove the upper nut
4. Unbolt the stabilizer bar bushing retainers and the two brackets (at each side) from the body (see illustration).
9.4 Remove the bushing retainer bolts and brackets from both the left and right retainers (left retainer shown)
Note: On Camry Solara convertible models, there is a floor reinforcement subassembly of braces that must be removed to allow stabilizer bar removal.
5. The stabilizer bar can now be removed from the vehicle. Pull the retainers off the stabilizer bar (if they haven’t fallen off already) using a rocking motion.
6. Check the bushings for wear, hardness, distortion, cracking and other signs of deterioration, replacing them if necessary. Check the stabilizer bar links as described in Stabilizer bar and bushings (front) — removal and installation, Step 9.
7. Using a wire brush, clean the areas of the bar where the bushings ride. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. If necessary, use a light coat of vegetable oil to ease bushing and U-bracket installation (don’t use petroleum-based products or brake fluid, as these will damage the rubber).
8. Installation is the reverse of removal. On Solara convertible models, tighten the floor reinforcement brace bolts to 38 ft-lbs.
