Steering gear boots — replacement
1. Loosen the lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel.
2. Remove the tie-rod end and jam nut (see Tie-rod ends — removal and installation).
3. Remove the steering gear boot clamps (see illustration) and slide off the boot.

4. Before installing the new boot, wrap the threads and serrations on the end of the steering rod with a layer of tape so the small end of the new boot isn’t damaged.
5. Slide the new boot into position on the steering gear until it seats in the groove in the steering rod and install new clamps.
6. Remove the tape and install the tie-rod end (see Tie-rod ends — removal and installation).
7. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the torque listed in the Tune-up and routine maintenance Specifications.
